The year 1953 marked the beginning of census taking in China. Following that, China conducted a census in 1964, 1982, 1990, 2000, and 2010. Its seventh census was conducted in late 2020, and data released in May 2021. According to the census result, the population of Mainland China was 1,411,778,724 in November 2020. Thus, China’s population growth rate is 0.59%.

China is the most populous country globally, and its population density was 153.3 people per square kilometer in 2020. Hong Kong, a metropolitan area in China, is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with an overall density of 6,300 people per square kilometer.
